nternal combustion engines generate immense power through controlled explosions, but this process creates significant torsional vibration in the crankshaft. If left unchecked, these vibrations can resonate at certain RPMs, potentially causing the crankshaft to twist violently and snap—a catastrophic failure. The crankshaft pulley, often called the harmonic balancer, is the device designed to prevent this. It consists of two metal rings separated by a layer of specialized damping rubber. As the crankshaft twists, the rubber layer shears slightly, absorbing the vibrational energy and smoothing out the rotation before it travels to the accessories and transmission.

Failure of a harmonic balancer is a common issue in high-mileage vehicles. Symptoms include visible wobbling of the pulley, squealing belts, or timing marks that appear to jump around when viewed with a timing light. If the rubber delaminates, the outer ring can slip or even fly off, taking the serpentine belt and power steering with it.
